Ancient oaks stretch their gnarled branches overhead while beech trees rustle in the wind at this proper Sussex woodland just outside Horsham. Basing Wood feels wild enough to let you forget you're minutes from the A24, with well-trodden paths weaving between centuries-old trees and newer plantings that create a lovely mix of light and shade.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place - there's enough space for proper off-lead romps without worrying about traffic or livestock. Families with younger children might find the terrain a bit uneven in places, but older kids who fancy a bit of scrambling over fallen logs will have a field day. The lack of formal facilities means bringing your own water and snacks, but that's half the appeal of a proper woodland walk.

Coming from one of the nearby campsites like Honeybridge Park or Washington Caravan & Camping Park, it's an easy morning excursion that won't eat into your whole day. Allow a good hour for a decent wander, though you could easily stretch it to two if you're the type who stops to identify every bird call. Spring brings bluebells in patches, while autumn turns the canopy into a proper show of golds and russets.
