Great Alder Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't get much better than this sprawling forest just outside Horsham. Great Alder Wood stretches for miles through the Sussex countryside, its mix of mature oak, beech and - naturally - alder trees creating proper cathedral-like canopies that filter the light beautifully.

Dog walkers absolutely love this place, and for good reason. The network of footpaths means you can easily spend a couple of hours here without retracing your steps. Kids will enjoy scrambling over fallen logs and hunting for wildlife, though younger ones might find the longer walks a bit much.

What sets this woodland apart is its genuine wildness - no manicured paths or visitor centres, just proper English forest as nature intended. The going can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn delivers that classic golden canopy.

Birders should bring binoculars - the mix of habitats supports everything from woodpeckers to warblers. Allow at least two hours for a proper explore, though serious walkers could easily make a half-day of it.

Staying at Washington Caravan & Camping Park or Honeybridge Park puts you within easy reach, making this an excellent addition to any Sussex holiday. It's the sort of place that reminds you why English woodland walks are hard to beat.
