Horsham

Ancient moats and sprawling woodlands define this corner of West Sussex, where Horsham sits comfortably between the South Downs and London's commuter belt. The town has that proper market town feel - not too polished, not too sleepy.

Horsham itself centres around a pedestrianised core that works well enough, though it's the surrounding countryside that really draws you in. Great Alder Wood and Little Alder Wood offer excellent walking just outside town, while Steyning Round Hill provides cracking views across the Downs when you fancy a proper climb. The area's dotted with remnants of older times too - there's a fascinating archaeological moat that speaks to centuries of settlement here.

Further afield, Wiston House adds a touch of grandeur to the landscape, and the Langmead Memorial marks local history worth seeking out. What strikes you most is how green it all feels. Basing Wood, Middlebarn Wood, Rookland Wood - the names alone tell you this is ancient woodland country, perfect for losing yourself on foot.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Horsham station connects directly to London Victoria in under an hour, making it a doddle for weekend escapes. The A24 cuts straight through if you're driving from the capital.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense for exploring both the town and this lovely stretch of West Sussex. You're close enough to nip into Horsham for supplies or a pub meal, yet surrounded by enough woodland and downland walking to keep you busy for a fortnight. Plus you're ideally placed for day trips to Brighton or deeper into the South Downs National Park.
