Beaton's Wood

Walk into Beaton's Wood near Lewes and you're immediately under a proper canopy of old trees - the kind that make you forget you're in Sussex rather than somewhere far deeper and wilder. It's a straightforward woodland experience: paths wind through beech and oak, light filters through in that particular way that makes even a damp autumn morning feel manageable. There's nothing flashy about it, which is rather the point.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place you pop into for forty minutes to an hour, clear your head, maybe spot some birds if you're lucky. Families with young legs might find it decent enough, though there's no playground nonsense to keep the restless entertained - if your kids need a play park attached to everything, this won't cut it. The wood itself is free to access and requires no booking, which keeps things wonderfully simple.

If you're camping at Golden Cross or Warren Wood - both within three miles - this makes an easy morning sortie before breakfast or an evening wander when the light's going soft. It's not a destination in itself, more a proper stretch of your legs if you're based nearby. Lewes itself is close enough for supplies and lunch, so you're not marooned. The Downs rise nearby too, so you could link this to something bigger if you wanted a proper half-day out. Honest woodland, nothing more, nothing less - and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
