Caldicott's Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Lewes, Caldicott's Wood offers the kind of quiet forest experience that doesn't require a postcard-worthy view to justify the trip. The trees here are old enough to make you forget the town's only a couple of miles away, and the paths wind through enough undergrowth to feel like actual exploration rather than a groomed nature trail.

It's best suited to walkers who like their woodland straightforward - no dramatic vistas, no visitor centre, just trees and earth and the occasional birdsong. Families with children will find it decent for an hour or so, though there's nothing to do once the novelty of being off-path wears thin. History types won't find much to anchor them here either. This is purely about the walk itself.

Entry appears to be free, and there's no time limit - you can spend as little as 30 minutes on a circuit or push deeper if you fancy it. Spring and autumn are the obvious choices, though winter has its own appeal if you don't mind damp. Summer can get muggy under the canopy.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Hale Farm, Golden Cross, or Fontmills Farm are all within easy reach - Caldicott's Wood works as a morning constitutional before heading elsewhere. It's not a destination in itself, but it's a solid option when you're already in the area and need a proper walk that doesn't demand planning.
