Knock Hatch Dry Ski Slope

You won't find snow here, but you will find a proper dry ski slope just outside Lewes where people actually learn to ski on plastic matting. Knock Hatch is one of those quietly useful facilities that doesn't make the tourism boards go mad but serves a genuine purpose - it's where locals and visitors alike practise their technique before heading off to the Alps or wherever.

The slope itself is modest. You're not looking at anything dramatic, just a functional run covered in that slightly springy synthetic surface that mimics snow reasonably well. It's the kind of place where kids can have a go without the expense of a mountain holiday, and skiers can keep their fitness up between winter trips. Families get the most from it, though you'll want to check if they offer lessons and what the actual rates are before you turn up.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Warren Wood or Golden Cross are just a few miles away - it's a decent wet-weather backup or a morning activity before heading elsewhere. The surrounding area has better draws, mind. Lewes itself is far more interesting for a day out, with its castle and high street.
