Ancient chalk streets wind upward from the River Ouse, their Georgian shopfronts hiding centuries of rebellion and revolution. Lewes wears its history lightly - this is where Simon de Montfort's barons faced Henry III in 1264, where Protestant martyrs met their fate, and where Guy Fawkes effigies still burn every bonfire night with proper medieval ferocity.

The High Street slopes dramatically toward Lewes Castle, its Norman keep commanding views across the South Downs that'll make your legs ache just looking at them. Anne of Cleves House sits quietly nearby, timber-framed and unassuming despite its royal connections. Antique shops and independent bookstores fill the gaps between pubs that've been serving pints since before America was discovered.

Beyond town, the countryside opens into proper downland - rolling chalk hills dotted with beech copses and ancient tracks. Michelham Priory House & Gardens offers a gentler afternoon, its moated ruins surrounded by working gardens that actually grow things rather than just look pretty. Art lovers should seek out Farleys House & Gallery, once home to surrealist photographer Lee Miller and her husband Roland Penrose.

Wooded valleys cut deep into the downs around here. Bramble Grove and Beaton's Wood provide decent walks without the tourist hordes, while Abbot's Wood stretches for miles of proper forest rambling.

Brighton's just twenty minutes by train, making Lewes feel almost metropolitan despite its market town soul. The A27 connects everything, though parking in the town centre requires patience and small change.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for evening pints at the Harveys brewery tap, far enough out to wake up to birdsong instead of traffic. The downs are literally on your doorstep.
