Beinn an Duibhe

The walk up Beinn an Duibhe from near Durness is a proper Highland experience - nothing fancy, just unforgiving terrain and views that stretch across to the north coast. You're looking at a serious hill walk rather than a casual stroll, with loose scree and steep sections that demand respect, especially when the weather turns. Allow a full afternoon, maybe four to five hours depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

When conditions are clear, the payoff is genuine. You can see right across to Handa Island and the Minch beyond, with Ben Stack rising in the distance. On a bad day? You'll be in cloud most of the way up. The Highland weather is moody and unpredictable, so pick your moment.

This isn't a walk for casual visitors or young kids - the terrain is technical and the exposure real. Mountain walkers and serious hikers will find it satisfying, though not particularly dramatic compared to Ben Stack or Suilven nearby. It's the kind of walk you do because you're in the area and the weather has briefly cooperated, not because you've driven three hours specially.

Stay at Sango Sands Oasis just down the coast - it's the obvious base for exploring this corner of Sutherland. From there, you've got Ben Stack and Handa Island within easy reach. Start early, check the forecast properly, and bring proper kit. The north coast shows no mercy to the unprepared.
