Geological Information Point

The Geological Information Point sits just outside Durness, a modest roadside stop that tells you far more about the landscape than you'd expect from its unassuming appearance. This is where the rocks quite literally change beneath your feet - the boundary between Lewisian gneiss and Cambrian sandstone, two entirely different geological stories separated by time and tectonic violence.

What you get is clarity. Rather than scrambling over boulders trying to work out which stone is which, you can actually read what's happening in the landscape. The information panels explain why Durness has that particular sandy quality to its beaches, why the cliffs look the way they do, and how all this ties into the broader story of Scotland's fractured geology. It's the kind of thing that transforms a walk from pleasant ambling into something you're actually paying attention to.

History enthusiasts and geology-minded walkers will find this genuinely useful. Kids will probably find it dull unless they're already into rocks - five minutes max - but it costs nothing and takes barely any time. Allow maybe 15 minutes if you're actually reading everything.

It works well as a stop-off when you're based at Sango Sands Oasis, just down the road. The caravan park sits right on Sango Bay, so you could easily pair this geological detour with the beach itself. Best visited on the way to Cape Wrath or while exploring the wider Durness area - don't go out of your way, but if you're passing, stop.
