Loch Eriboll Lighthouse

The lighthouse sits at the head of Loch Eriboll, a proper finger of water that cuts deep into the far north coast near Durness. It's a working beacon still, painted in that classic red and white, and the setting is absolutely wild - you're at the edge of things up here, where the loch opens to the sea and the landscape feels genuinely remote.

Getting there means a decent walk from the nearest road, and honestly, that's part of the charm. The path takes you through moorland with views that expand with every step, and the light itself stands white against that Highland backdrop. You won't spend hours here - twenty minutes on site if you've got a camera, longer if you're just soaking it in - but it's the sort of place that stays with you.

It works best for walkers and photographers rather than families with young kids, mainly because there's not much to do once you arrive except look and take pictures. The approach matters more than the destination, which sounds backward until you're standing there with the loch at your feet.

If you're based at Sango Sands Oasis - the excellent caravan park just five miles away - this makes a proper morning expedition. Pack the walk in before breakfast and you'll have the place largely to yourself. No facilities at the lighthouse itself, so bring water. Winter light here is extraordinary if you can handle the cold.
