Faraid Head

The drive to Faraid Head takes you to the far northwest tip of the Scottish mainland, where the land simply runs out. Durness sits at the gateway, but once you're past the village, you're in proper wilderness - single-track roads, wide open moorland, and the sense that you've driven to the edge of something significant.

Faraid Head itself is a dramatic sandstone promontory that juts into the sea between Balnakeil Bay and the Kyle of Durness. The walk to the headland takes about 45 minutes across rough moorland and beach - it's not demanding, but it's real hiking terrain, so decent boots help. The payoff is genuine: the peninsula offers 360-degree views of crashing Atlantic swells, northern coastline that feels properly remote, and on clear days, you can see far enough north to feel like you're at the roof of Britain.

This is for walkers and photographers, really. Kids might manage it, but the terrain's boggy in places and there's nothing to do once you're there except look and breathe. That's the appeal, though. No visitor centre, no cafe, no managed experience - just a wild headland that demands a bit of effort.

It's free, and you can't really do it in less than two hours round trip including the walk. Sango Sands Oasis, just outside Durness, makes a sensible base if you're camping or want a holiday park stay. Pair it with walks around Smoo Cave or drives along the north coast, and you've got a proper Highland trip. Go in summer or early autumn - winter winds here are no joke.
