Beinn Bheula

The climb up Beinn Bheula starts gentle enough from Cairndow, following a track that winds through forestry before breaking out onto proper mountain ground. It's a solid day out - around 2,000 feet of ascent with views that stretch across Loch Fyne and right over to the Cowal Peninsula when the weather plays ball. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but it's a proper mountain feeling all the same, and you get a real sense of being away from things.

This one's for walkers rather than casual strollers. You'll need four to five hours return, depending on fitness, and decent boots are non-negotiable - the ground gets boggy and the final section requires some scrambling. It's not technical, but it demands respect. Families with older kids who've got some hill experience will manage fine; younger ones might struggle with the pace.

The best approach is from the A83 near Cairndow, where you can park at the start of the track. There's no charge, and the route is open year-round, though winter brings serious snow and ice concerns. Go in summer or early autumn for the most reliable conditions.

If you're based at Drimsynie Holiday Village or Loch Eck Caravan Park - both within easy reach - this makes a cracking day trip that keeps you properly busy without requiring a dawn start. The Trossachs and Arrochar Alps are nearby if you want multiple walks in a week. Beinn Bheula stands slightly apart from the famous peaks, which means you'll likely have the mountain far quieter than Ben Lomond.
