Clach Bheinn

The walk up Clach Bheinn rewards you with views across Loch Fyne that justify the slog. From Cairndow, it's a proper hill rather than a gentle stroll - you're looking at a couple of hours up and the same back down, so come prepared with decent boots and water.

What makes it worth doing is the vantage point itself. You get the whole sweep of the loch laid out below, with the Cowal hills rising up on the far side. On a clear day - and you need to pick your moment in Argyll - you can see right down towards the Kintyre peninsula. The peak itself is modest and the path is well-trodden, though muddy after rain, which is often.

Walkers will get genuine satisfaction from this one. It's steep enough to feel like an achievement without needing scrambling skills or specialist kit. Families with teenagers will manage fine if they're used to hillwalking, but younger kids might find the climb tedious. There's nothing at the summit except the view and a cairn, so don't expect facilities or shelter.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Loch Eck is particularly good, only 5.8 miles away - this works as a half-day excursion. Base yourself at Drimsynie or Glenfinart and you're close enough to tackle it without eating up a whole day. Early morning starts beat the afternoon crowds and mist. Free to climb, naturally. Allow three hours minimum including a break at the top.
