Tom Molach

The climb up Tom Molach sits roughly three miles south of Cairndow, and it's one of those hills that looks modest until you're actually on it. At 2,421 feet, it's not the Highlands' most famous peak, but that's rather the point - the path stays quiet even on decent weekends, which means the views across Loch Fyne and towards the Arrochar Alps feel properly earned without the crowds.

The walk takes around two to three hours return, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's no technical scrambling, just relentless ascent through moorland that opens up as you climb higher. On a clear day you'll see Beinn Bhuidhe across the loch and the bulk of Ben Ime beyond. The descent can be slippery after rain, so good boots matter.

This is squarely for walkers rather than casual strollers. Kids over ten who've done a few hills will manage it fine, but younger ones may struggle with the length and gradient. History buffs won't find much up here - it's geology and landscape that reward you, not archaeology.
