Loch Goil Marine Protected Area

The water here is properly cold and dark, reflecting the steep hills that plunge straight down to Loch Goil's edge. This Marine Protected Area stretches along one of Argyll's most dramatic sea lochs, and it's the kind of place where you go specifically to watch wildlife rather than expect crowds or facilities.

You'll see seals hauled out on the rocks - grey seals mostly, sometimes harbour seals if you're lucky - and if you're patient, porpoises and dolphins move through the deeper channels. The real draw is the underwater life, which is why the loch earned its protected status. Divers come for the kelp forests and the sheer rocky walls that drop down. Even from the shore, you can spot otters working the shoreline, particularly in the quieter bays around Lochgoilhead, the small village at the loch's northern end.

This works best for serious nature watchers and photographers rather than casual tourists. There's no visitor centre or designated trail - you're exploring by car or boat, pulling over at viewpoints where you find them. Allow a morning or afternoon to properly absorb it. Spring and early summer are best for wildlife spotting, though autumn brings better light.

Stay at Drimsynie Holiday Village just 2.9 miles away if you want a proper base. It's close enough that you can revisit the loch without the drive, and Forest Holidays Ardgartan, 5.7 miles south, puts you near Loch Eck as well. Cairndow sits inland a few miles if you need supplies.
