Ben Glas

The walk up Ben Glas from Arrochar is one of those Scottish hill routes that feels properly satisfying without requiring mountaineering skills. You're looking at a 797-metre peak that sits right next to its taller neighbour Ben Vorlich, and the views across Loch Lomond and towards the Arrochar Alps more than justify the slog.

It takes most people around two to three hours to reach the summit, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The path is straightforward enough - no scrambling, no exposure - which makes it ideal for confident walkers who want a proper Highland experience without the technical stuff. Families with older kids and plenty of stamina will manage it fine.

What makes Ben Glas worth the detour is the relative quiet. Most visitors crowd Ben Vorlich instead, leaving this one pleasingly clear. The descent can be steep on the knees, so decent boots matter. You'll want a clear day for the walk - cloud cover kills the whole point of being up here.

If you're staying at Beinglas Campsite just down the road, this is practically on your doorstep and absolutely the natural move for your morning or afternoon. The campsite sits at the trailhead more or less, cutting out any drive time. Loch Lomond Holiday Park, six miles away, works too if you're basing yourself there for a few days and want to tackle the Arrochar peaks methodically.

Allow half a day minimum. Start early, bring water, and go on a day when the weather's actually playing ball.
