Stob na Coinnich Bhacain

The walk up Stob na Coinnich Bhacain from Arrochar is a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll, but it rewards the leg work with views across the Arrochar Alps that justify the effort. This is a peak that sits within the Arrochar cluster, a group of mountains that rise sharp and unexpected from the lowlands, and on a clear day you'll see right across Loch Long and into the broader landscape beyond.

It's a walker's mountain, not a tourist trap. You won't find facilities at the top or a car park 500 metres from the summit. What you get instead is the satisfaction of earning your views and the kind of solitude you rarely find in Scottish Highlands these days. Most people tackling this are hillwalkers with proper boots and a map, though fit families with teenagers do make the ascent.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on fitness. The path itself is well-trodden but steep in sections, and the ground can be boggy lower down, particularly after rain. There's no charge - it's just open hillside. Early morning in summer gives you the best light and the fewest midges.

If you're camping at Beinglas or Loch Lomond Holiday Park, this makes an excellent day out that takes you away from the busier attractions. You're close enough to base yourself comfortably, but the walk itself feels properly remote. It's not the highest mountain in the area, but it's arguably the most rewarding for the effort involved.
