Ben Reoch

Ben Reoch sits just above Arrochar, a modest peak that punches well above its weight if you're after a proper Scottish hill walk without the full commitment of its bigger neighbours. At around 800 metres, it's not going to exhaust you, but the path is steep enough to earn your legs' attention. The view north across Loch Long is genuinely striking - water, mountains, and that particular quality of light you only get in Argyll on a clear day.

This is a walk for people who want to feel they've accomplished something without needing ropes and ice axes. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the climb tedious. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness. You'll start from the A83, and the ascent is relentless rather than technical - bring proper boots.

The real advantage of Ben Reoch is its position in the wider Arrochar landscape. Do this one, then tackle Ben Arthur or Ben Ime if you're feeling ambitious. If you're based at Forest Holidays Ardgartan, just down the road, this makes a cracking morning outing before heading back for lunch. Inverbeg Holiday Park is even closer at just 3.4 miles away. The peak itself is free - there's no gate fee or visitor centre, just you and the hill. Winter and spring can be brutal; summer and early autumn are your sweet spot. Go on a day with proper visibility or you're wasting the walk.
