Croggan Hill

The climb up Croggan Hill is straightforward enough - nothing technical, just solid legwork from Arrochar. You get sweeping views across Loch Long and into the Cowal peninsula, which on a clear day justify the effort entirely. It's the sort of walk that doesn't require specialist kit but does demand proper footwear and a bit of fitness.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're staying at Forest Holidays Ardgartan or Inverbeg, it makes a cracking half-day outing - roughly two hours up and down depending on pace. The summit isn't dramatic or particularly high, but the outlook matters more here than the destination itself. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a slog without proper motivation.

Go early morning if you can. The midges can be vicious in summer, and afternoon cloud tends to roll in from the west. There's no charge and no facilities, so bring water and something to eat. The nearest facilities are back in Arrochar itself.

What makes this worthwhile is how it sits within a proper hillwalking landscape. Combined with other peaks in the area, it forms part of a bigger circuit for serious walkers, but it stands alone as an accessible half-day if you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby. Drimsynie is a bit further out, but Ardgartan and Inverbeg put you within striking distance. It's not showy or famous, but it does what it says.
