Tom Buidhe

Tom Buidhe sits at 982 metres in the hills above Arrochar, and frankly it's the sort of peak that rewards effort without demanding expertise. The walk itself is straightforward enough - mostly boggy moorland with decent paths - but what you get for your trouble is a proper highland experience without the technical scrambling of its flashier neighbours. The views across Loch Lomond and towards the broader Cowal peninsula are genuinely striking on a clear day. If visibility's poor, mind, you'll feel you've climbed for nothing.

Walkers serious about their hills will get the most from this one. It's not a casual afternoon stroll - reckon on four to five hours return from the Arrochar valley floor - but it's not so technical that you need ropes or specialist kit. Families with older teenagers who've done a few hills already would manage it fine. Younger kids? You're looking at a long day with tired legs.

Free to climb, naturally. Start early if weather's looking changeable, which it often does in Argyll. Summer months are best, though autumn can be spectacular if you catch a clear day. The nearest towns offer nowhere particular to stay right at the trailhead, but Forest Holidays Ardgartan sits just 5 miles south near Loch Eck - proper forest lodges with decent walking infrastructure. Glenfinart and Inverbeg are close by too if you want caravan park facilities. Tom Buidhe works well as part of a longer hill-walking holiday in the area rather than a standalone visit.
