The entrance to Big Meanie is genuinely dramatic - a gaping mouth of rock that announces itself without any fuss. This cave system near Carnforth cuts into the Yorkshire landscape with real presence, and the walk to reach it rewards you with decent views across the surrounding hills. Inside, it's not vast, but the passage winds deeper than you'd expect from the modest entrance, with pale limestone walls that catch light properly if you bring a torch. The whole thing feels exploratory without being genuinely treacherous - you're scrambling rather than abseiling. History types will appreciate that this has been used and inhabited for centuries, though these days it's mostly visited by local cavers and curious walkers. Bring proper footwear because the floor is damp and uneven. Allow an hour if you're taking it slowly and want to properly look around. This isn't a guided cave tour with handrails - it's more of a 'find your own way' situation, which is either exactly what you want or absolutely not what you want. If you're staying at Primrose Glamping Pods just down the road, it's a decent half-day excursion. Worth combining with walks around the wider Lancashire limestone country rather than treating it as a standalone stop. Not for the claustrophobic, and honestly not thrilling if you've done proper show caves elsewhere.
