Billicombe Wood

Walk into Billicombe Wood and you're straight into proper Somerset woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a modest forest spread near Bridgwater, nothing dramatic, but genuine enough for a couple of hours if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like The Hideout or Thornhills.

The wood itself offers straightforward walking through mixed trees and woodland paths. There's no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of, and no entrance fee - you just turn up. It's the sort of place where families with younger kids can let them run around without worrying about crowds, and walkers will appreciate the quiet. On a grey Somerset afternoon it's actually rather atmospheric.

Really, the appeal here is simplicity. You're not going to spend all day - an hour or so gets you through nicely depending on which paths you take - but it's ideal if you're camped nearby and want to stretch your legs without driving anywhere. The wood sits close enough to Bridgwater that you could easily combine it with a trip into town for supplies or a decent meal.

It's not going to change your life. But if you've got kids who need proper outdoor space, or you just fancy a quiet woodland walk between other activities, it does the job well. The lack of commercialisation is actually its strength - there's something refreshing about a wood that's just... a wood.
