Catcott Complex Nature Reserve

The levels around Bridgwater hold something most visitors miss entirely - a sprawling wetland reserve that feels more like wilderness than manicured nature spot. Catcott Complex is the real deal if you're into birds, insects, and the kind of walking that doesn't come with a gift shop at the end.

What you get here is open fen and wet grassland stretching across several hundred acres. The network of paths lets you move through different habitats - reed beds, shallow pools, rough pasture - and the bird life changes accordingly depending on season. Spring brings warblers and nesting birds. Winter attracts wigeon and teal. It's proper rewarding if you know what you're looking for, though honestly you don't need to be a twitcher to enjoy spotting something unexpected.

This isn't a place to drag reluctant teenagers. It works best for walkers who genuinely want solitude and wildlife watching rather than quick photo stops. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're doing a decent loop - the paths can be muddy and the terrain's flat but boggy underfoot. Bring proper boots.

Free access, no facilities to speak of, and it's the sort of reserve that rewards repeat visits across different times of year. Staying at The Hideout or Castle Farm Campsite nearby puts you within easy reach, and you could easily combine this with other Somerset wetland walks. The beauty is how undeveloped it remains - no cafe, no car park attendant, no crowds. Just you, the birds, and a lot of space.
