Bird Pond

A shallow stretch of water just outside Chichester that punches well above its weight for bird watching. Early morning is the only time to visit if you're serious about spotting anything - by mid-morning the place empties of wildlife and fills with dog walkers, which rather defeats the purpose.

The pond itself is modest, ringed by rough grass and scattered trees. You won't find viewing platforms or interpretation boards. What you will find, if you time it right, are water birds that genuinely repay close attention. Herons, grebes, the occasional rarer wader if you're lucky. Bring binoculars and patience in equal measure.

Best suited to keen birdwatchers and patient naturalists rather than families looking for entertainment. Young children will lose interest after twenty minutes, though that's fine if you're camped at Creative Camping just down the road - it's close enough for a proper early expedition without eating up your whole morning.

Access appears unrestricted and free, though there's nowhere to park right at the pond itself. You'll walk in from nearby streets, which keeps it blessedly quiet. Go in winter or spring migration periods for the best returns. Summer can be productive too, but the grass gets long and the insects biblical.

Works well as a supplementary activity during a wider South Sussex holiday based at one of the nearby parks. It's the sort of place that rewards proper attention rather than a casual stroll, so know what you're coming for before you arrive.
