The Cathedral Course

An 18-hole championship course set on the outskirts of Chichester, The Cathedral Course is designed for golfers who want a proper test without the stuffiness of some private clubs. The layout winds through mature woodland and open fairways, with water hazards and strategically placed bunkers keeping you honest throughout. It's a decent challenge whether you're a 10-handicap or pushing 20.

Golfers will get the most from this one - obviously - but it's particularly good for mid-range players who've grown past par-3 courses but aren't ready to be humbled at championship venues. The routing is intelligent rather than gimmicky, and the conditioning is solid year-round. Reckon on allowing four hours for a full round, or two and a half if you're quick off the mark.

Stay at one of the nearby holiday parks - Creative Camping is closest at 1.4 miles, or Chichester Lakeside if you fancy a bit more comfort - and you've got a handy base for a golfing break. Combine it with Butlins Bognor Regis just four miles away if you're bringing non-golfing family; at least everyone gets a day out without anyone feeling sidelined. The course isn't cheap to play, but it's reasonably priced for the quality on offer. Best visited midweek if you can swing it - weekends draw a slower crowd.
