RSPB Pagham Harbour LNR

The shallow waters and reed beds here make Pagham Harbour one of the south coast's most reliable spots for spotting waders and wildfowl. It's an RSPB reserve, which means the land is actively managed for birds rather than visitors, and that's exactly why it works so well.

You get two proper walking routes - the main circuit is about three miles and takes you along sea walls with views across the harbour. The shorter route cuts it down to roughly ninety minutes, which is plenty if you're not a dedicated birdwatcher. Bring binoculars, obviously, or you'll spend half your time squinting at distant specs and wondering if that was a spotted redshank or just a common gull. Winter is peak season here - October through March pulls in migrating birds that make the journey south from northern Europe. Summer's quieter but still productive if you know what you're looking for.

It's free to walk, though the RSPB appreciates donations. The nearest proper facilities are in Chichester, a short drive back inland. If you're based at Creative Camping or Church Farm Holiday Village just up the road, this is a natural half-day option before lunch. Families with older kids who can manage three miles will find it decent; younger children tend to get restless when the payoff is "look through this telescope at a brown bird two hundred yards away."

The harbour itself is lovely - wide open water backed by farmland - but this isn't a scenic walk for the sake of it. Come here because you want to see birds. Come here because you're serious about it.
