Black Hayes

Black Hayes is a proper woodland walk just outside Coalbrookdale, the sort of place where you can lose an hour without noticing. It's dense forest - dark conifers mixed with deciduous trees - and the paths wind through enough to make you feel properly away from things, even though you're never far from civilisation.

The main appeal is straightforward: woodland walking. It's ideal for families who want something more interesting than a flat park circuit, though the paths can get a bit muddy and uneven underfoot, so decent boots are worth the effort. You'll spot the odd stream, plenty of shade, and if you're lucky the occasional glimpse of wildlife. It's the kind of place where kids might actually engage rather than complain about being bored halfway round.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - it's just the woods themselves - which means it's free and you can turn up whenever suits you. Most people will want two hours maximum, depending on how many wrong turns you take and whether you stop to properly breathe.

Location-wise, you're bang in the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge area. Combine it with a base at Irongorge Camping or Sytche Caravan Park and you've got a solid morning or afternoon sorted before heading into Coalbrookdale proper to see the industrial heritage stuff. Black Hayes works best in that context - filling a quiet slot in your day rather than being the main event.
