Black Lough

Black Lough sits just outside Morpeth, a proper water's edge walk that doesn't require a map or special permission. It's a small lake, ringed by trees, with a footpath that lets you loop around it in about forty minutes without breaking a sweat. The water's dark - hence the name - and on grey days it feels moody and atmospheric. On brighter afternoons it's genuinely peaceful.

This isn't a destination lake like Windermere. You won't find cafes or visitor facilities. What you get instead is a bit of Northumberland countryside without the crowds, which appeals to families wanting an easy woodland walk and walkers who prefer their lakes understated. The path is mostly flat and well-trodden, so it works for young kids and older legs alike. Birdwatchers do well here, particularly in spring.

Allow an hour if you're ambling, thirty minutes if you're just stretching your legs. There's usually enough parking near the entrance, though it fills up on bank holidays. Early morning or late afternoon tends quieter.

Stay at Percy Wood Holiday Park just 3.2 miles away and you've got a nice morning or late-day activity without driving far. It pairs well with the bigger attractions around Rothbury if you're basing yourself there for a week. Black Lough works best as part of a broader Morpeth area itinerary rather than a standalone trip, but it's absolutely worth an hour of your time.
