Edlingham Crags Forestry England

The sandstone crags at Edlingham rise up from the forest floor like something from a proper adventure story. You're walking through Forestry England land near Morpeth when suddenly the rocks appear - weathered, angular, commanding. It's a landscape that makes you stop and look twice.

What you actually get here is a solid woodland walk with real geological drama thrown in. The crags themselves aren't massive - this isn't Ben Nevis - but they're substantial enough to feel special, especially if you're exploring with kids who want something more interesting than a flat forest trail. The trees crowd around the rocks, which means the light does interesting things when you're down among them.

Best for walkers and families after a couple of hours outdoors. You won't need specialist gear or fitness, just decent boots and a willingness to pick your way over roots. The crags reward a proper look rather than a quick snap - climb round them, find the angles where they catch the light.

This works brilliantly alongside a park holiday. You're only a few miles from Percy Wood Holiday Park and Riverside Rothbury Holiday Park, which means you could do this as a morning walk, grab lunch in Morpeth, then head back to your accommodation. Woodland Chase Glamping and Whitton Glebe are equally close - close enough that you could visit more than once during a week-long stay without it eating your petrol budget.

Access is free, parking is limited but fine for a few cars. Go when you've got decent light - mornings in late spring or early autumn are cracking.
