Black Rock Llamas

You'll find actual llamas at Black Rock, just outside Porthmadog in Gwynedd - which is either the best thing or slightly bonkers, depending on your view of camelids in North Wales. It's a proper working llama farm where you can meet the animals up close, and if you're after something different from the usual seaside caravan park routine, this fits the bill.

The farm works well for families with younger kids who get a kick out of hands-on animal encounters. Don't expect ChChester Zoo levels of infrastructure though - this is small-scale, genuine farm stuff. You'll spend anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours here depending on how much your children want to fuss over individual llamas. Llamas are docile creatures and frankly quite funny to watch, all long necks and sideways glances.

It's worth ringing ahead to check opening times and admission costs, as details are thin on the ground. The location is genuinely convenient if you're based at any of the caravan parks clustered around Porthmadog - Garreg Goch is barely a mile away, and Black Rock Sands Touring and Camping Park itself is less than two miles up the road. This area gets wet and windy regularly, so pick a decent day and don't expect to linger for hours.

If you've exhausted the usual beach and mountain activities, it's a low-key diversion that breaks up the week. Kids either love it or find it mildly underwhelming - there's rarely a middle ground with llamas.
