Blackhorse Hill

The walk up Blackhorse Hill rewards you with proper Sussex views - rolling farmland, the odd copse of trees, and on a clear day, enough distance to make the climb worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but that's rather the point. From Battle, it's an easy enough leg up, and you won't find yourself queuing behind crowds of Instagram hunters at the top.

This is squarely walkers' territory. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog for modest payoff, though older children who enjoy a proper countryside ramble will be fine. History buffs should note Battle itself is just down the road - the 1066 battlefield site rather overshadows a modest hill - but Blackhorse Hill gives you the landscape context those sites lack. You're essentially standing where people once stood, looking at land that hasn't changed dramatically in centuries.

Allow a couple of hours round trip from Battle town centre. There's no charge for accessing the hill itself, and it works brilliantly as a break from holiday park life - several decent options sit within a few miles, including Crowhurst Park practically on the doorstep at just 0.4 miles. Pop up for an hour, stretch your legs, take in the view, then head back for supper.

It's the sort of stop that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is exactly why it's worth the detour. No facilities up top, so bring water and something to eat if you're stopping for a proper sit-down.
