The woodland paths at Blackwater Woods cut through a proper tangle of oak and beech, with the forest floor soft underfoot even in dry weather. Best in autumn when the light slants through the trees properly, though spring's quieter if you want to avoid school holidays crowding up the place. The location works brilliantly if you're based at any of the nearby New Forest campsites - Black Knowl, Long Meadow, or Hollands Wood are all within ten minutes' drive. It slots in perfectly as a morning walk before heading to Brockenhurst for lunch or as an afternoon detour between other Forest activities.
