Giant Sequoia

Standing at well over 150 feet tall, this magnificent specimen of Sequoiadendron giganteum dwarfs everything around it in the New Forest. The tree was planted in Victorian times and has grown into something genuinely impressive - its trunk is so wide that several people can barely link arms around it. You'll find it on a footpath not far from Brockenhurst, though the exact location takes a bit of local knowledge to track down.

Families with older children will appreciate the sheer scale of the thing, though toddlers might be less impressed after the novelty wears off in about five minutes. It's free to visit, naturally, and makes for a pleasant half-hour detour during a longer forest walk. The tree stands in a small clearing surrounded by typical New Forest heathland and woodland.

Campers staying at any of the nearby sites - Hollands Wood, Setthorns or Long Meadow - could easily incorporate this into a forest ramble. It's not exactly a destination in itself, but if you're already exploring the area around Brockenhurst, it's well worth seeking out. Best combined with a visit to the village itself or a longer trek through the forest proper.
