Bodowyr Chambered Tomb

Five thousand years ago, someone built this stone burial chamber on Anglesey and it's still here, which is frankly remarkable. Bodowyr sits in open countryside near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, a proper Neolithic tomb that predates Stonehenge by centuries. The capstone alone weighs several tonnes - how they managed to balance it on those uprights with Bronze Age technology is anyone's guess.

History buffs will love clambering around the stones and pondering ancient burial rituals. Kids might need a bit more imagination to get excited about what essentially looks like a giant stone table in a field, though mine enjoyed pretending it was a giant's dining room. The tomb stands freely accessible in farmland, so wear decent walking boots and mind the sheep.

There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, which keeps it wonderfully atmospheric but means you'll want to read up beforehand. Allow half an hour unless you're a serious archaeology enthusiast. The setting is lovely - rolling Anglesey countryside with Snowdonia visible on clear days.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Plas Coch or Coed Helen, it makes a good short excursion. Combine it with Bryn Celli Ddu, another ancient tomb a few miles away, for a proper prehistoric tour of the island.
