Borwick Hill

The walk up Borwick Hill takes about an hour from Kendal, and it's the sort of fell that rewards you without demanding too much in return. Not a scramble, not technical - just a steady climb through mixed woodland that opens out onto moorland with proper views across the valley. On a clear day you'll see right across to the Lake District peaks, which makes the effort worthwhile even if the summit itself is modest.

This is walker territory, really. Families with older kids will manage it fine if they're used to hills, but littler ones might struggle with the duration. The terrain's straightforward enough - nothing dramatic - but there's a fair bit of climbing and it's not the sort of thing to rush. Two to three hours all in, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

From any of the campsites near Windermere - Damson View or Lakeland Glamping are closest - you're only twenty minutes' drive from the trailhead. It works well as a morning outing before heading to one of the bigger attractions, or as a proper walk day if you're basing yourself around Kendal. The moorland gives you a genuine sense of elevation without the Lake District's busier summits feeling like a cattle market. Free to access, naturally. No facilities up there though, so bring water and something to eat.
