Bosley Locks

The canal locks at Bosley are proper working engineering - a flight of six that lift you up 75 feet through the Staffordshire countryside near Congleton. They're not fancy or manicured, which is exactly their appeal. You'll see narrowboats moving through the locks, water spilling down the weir, and the whole mechanism doing what it's been doing since the 1830s without any fuss.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The towpath is straightforward, and you can follow it north towards Rudyard or south towards Macclesfield - both directions are decent walks through proper canal-side countryside. It's the kind of place where you stand and watch for ten minutes, then walk on. Families with young kids might find it engaging for twenty minutes or so, especially if a boat happens to be coming through.

There's nothing to pay and no restrictions on when you can visit. The best time is when the canal's busy - spring and summer weekends tend to have boats moving through, which makes the whole thing feel alive rather than just looking at static water.

Stay at Avona Escapes Glamping & Camping just two miles away - the biker-friendly vibe means a laid-back crowd - or Kisswood Cabins at three miles for something a touch more comfortable. Rudyard Vale Caravan Park, five and a half miles south, puts you closer to Rudyard Lake if you want a bigger water feature. Bosley's the warm-up act, not the main event, but it's worth the detour if you're already in the area.
