About Bowers Wood
It's brilliant for families who don't need a visitor centre with gift shop and ice cream van. Kids will love scrambling over logs and hunting for woodland creatures, though you'll need to keep them close - there are no formal paths, which means exploring requires a decent map or GPS. Walkers appreciate the lack of crowds and the genuine wildness of it. History types will find the ancient woodland designation interesting, though there aren't any obvious archaeological features to point out.
Allow a couple of hours minimum. There's no admission charge that I'm aware of, and no facilities - bring water and snacks. The best time is late April through May when the flowers are out, though it's worth visiting any season if you want to escape the busy spots.
If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road, this makes an easy morning walk before heading into Hungerford proper. It's not a destination attraction on its own, but as part of a wider Berkshire woodland crawl, it's absolutely worth your time. Proper woodland, none of the manicured nonsense.
