Bronze Age Bowl Barrow

A grassy mound in open countryside near Ringwood that most people drive past without a second glance - but stop and you're standing on top of a Bronze Age burial site that's roughly 4,000 years old. The bowl barrow itself is modest, just a rounded earthwork maybe twenty metres across, but that's precisely why it's worth the detour. There's no car park, no café, no interpretive boards telling you what to think. You simply climb up, look around at the Dorset landscape spreading out in all directions, and try to picture the people who built this for their dead millennia ago.

It's the kind of place that appeals to history buffs and anyone with a genuine interest in archaeology - not the Instagram crowd. Kids will get bored within five minutes unless they're genuinely into the Bronze Age. The walk from Ringwood takes maybe forty minutes depending on your route, and it's worth combining with other sites in the area if you're properly keen.

Free to visit and open whenever. Best to go early or late in the day when you've got the fields to yourself. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Oakdene Forest Park or Meadowbank Holidays are both within four miles - this makes a sensible half-day outing, especially if you're the type who finds theme parks and attractions tiresome. The reality is you'll spend twenty minutes here maximum, so pair it with a proper walk across the heathland or a pint in Ringwood afterwards.
