Brownmuir Plantation

The trees here are proper tall - Douglas firs and Scots pine rising up so suddenly from the Renfrewshire flatlands that you feel you've stumbled into somewhere altogether wilder than the Lowlands have any right to be. Brownmuir Plantation sits just outside Lochwinnoch, a forest block that works perfectly as a walk-through if you're staying at one of the local holiday parks or exploring the loch itself.

There's nothing flashy about it. No visitor centre, no café, no marked trails with laminated maps. You just turn up, find a way in through the trees, and walk. The woodland floor is soft and the air smells like resin and damp earth - the kind of place where an hour disappears without you noticing. Families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes before the novelty of "just more trees" wears thin, but serious walkers will find good hours here, especially if you link it with a longer circuit around the loch area.

The Pods at Auchenhean - about three miles away - would be a decent base if you're planning a woodland stay. Close enough to pop over for an afternoon walk without it feeling like a commitment. Spring's probably best, when the understory gets light and you can actually see through the trees rather than just into green gloom. Worth a detour if you're in the area and want a bit of forest air, but don't expect anything beyond what you see: trees, peace, and the occasional bird. That's rather the point.
