Bàrr Mòr

The walk up Bàrr Mòr from Oban is straightforward enough, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. This isn't Ben Nevis - it's a proper hill rather than a mountain - but the views out across the Firth of Lorn make the effort genuinely worthwhile. On a clear day you're looking at the islands properly: Mull, Lismore, the lot. The peak itself is bare, grass and stone, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point.

It takes around two hours up and back from Oban town, so you're not committing your entire day. The path is well-trodden and mostly manageable, though it gets steep near the top and can be boggy after rain - proper waterproofs aren't optional. History types might find the views interesting from a tactical standpoint (it's where locals once watched for Viking raids), but this is really a walk for anyone after a bit of elevation and honest Scottish scenery without the alpine complications.

If you're staying at Argyll Kayaker Cove or Sunnybrae Holiday Park nearby, this slots in perfectly as a half-day adventure. Head up mid-morning, take a flask, enjoy the view for twenty minutes or so. The real gain here is that it feels authentically remote despite being five minutes from Oban's tourist infrastructure. It's the kind of walk that reminds you why people bother with Scotland at all.
