Cnoc Moine

The walk up Cnoc Moine is a proper little lung-buster, but it rewards you quickly. From Oban, you're looking at a straightforward hill rather than a mountain - nothing that'll take your breath away in terms of technical difficulty, but the views across the Firth of Lorn and towards the Treshnish Islands more than make up for the effort. On a clear day, you can pick out the Isle of Mull looming to the west, and the whole panorama of Argyll spreads out beneath you.

This one suits walkers wanting something achievable without a full day's commitment. You're not talking about specialist gear or scrambling; proper boots and decent weather are your main requirements. The ascent takes roughly an hour to ninety minutes, leaving you plenty of time to sit about at the summit with tea from a flask and actually absorb the landscape rather than just sprinting to the top for a photo.

Timing-wise, aim for the shoulder seasons - late spring through early autumn gives you the best chance of clear conditions. Midwinter is a slog when visibility tends to be rubbish. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks like Argyll Kayaker Cove or Sunnybrae, Cnoc Moine makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing that won't derail your wider plans around Oban. The town itself sits a short drive away, so you've got proper facilities and restaurants to fall back on afterwards. Families with capable young walkers will manage fine; very small children might find the steepness frustrating, but it's hardly Alpine.
