Druim an Fhaillich

The walk up Druim an Fhaillich isn't going to win any awards for drama, but on a clear day from Oban it's a solid afternoon's graft with proper rewards. You're looking at a modest peak - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the views across to the islands more than make up for it. The path isn't waymarked brilliantly, so you'll need to know what you're doing or have a map handy. Most people can knock this out in three to four hours return, depending on pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath or admire the outlook.

It's genuinely worth doing if you're staying at one of the holiday parks nearby - Sunnybrae or Argyll Kayaker Cove both put you within easy striking distance. The walk itself is best tackled when you've got decent visibility; mist rolls in fast up here and suddenly you're just wandering about in cloud. Spring through early autumn is your safest bet.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough that reasonably fit families could manage it, though smaller kids might find the slog a bit tedious. The real appeal is the break from the usual busier peaks - you won't be queuing to summit or dodging crowds. Oban itself is only a few miles away, so you can easily combine this with exploring the town or hopping on a boat trip. Bring proper boots - the ground can be boggy - and waterproofs even when it looks fine. The weather changes in minutes.
