Bryn Dinas

The walk up Bryn Dinas from Tywyn is properly steep, but that's rather the point. You're climbing to an Iron Age fort perched on a hillside above the Ceredigion coast, and the views justify every laboured breath on the way up. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic crag or trig point - but the earthworks are genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking at. Those banks and ditches are the real deal, defensive structures built over two thousand years ago.

It's a walk rather than a destination you can half-effort. Budget ninety minutes return from the car park, longer if you dawdle and look around. The path is clear enough but muddy after rain, and in summer the grass grows tall enough to hide ruts. Bring decent boots. Once you're up there, the Cardigan Bay views are worth lingering for, especially if the weather's cooperating.

Families with capable walkers will get something from this. Younger kids will find the fort confusing - it's all grassy lumps and bumps - so expect questions and possibly boredom. History enthusiasts absolutely should come, though. The site cards little fanfare but it's a proper Iron Age settlement with real archaeology.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Tywyn - Gwerniago or Searivers are closest - this makes a solid morning or early afternoon jaunt. Pair it with the coastal path walks that surround the town. Admission is free, obviously. No facilities up there, so bring water.
