Bryn-Saith-Eglwys

The walk up Bryn-Saith-Eglwys from Llanrwst is properly rewarding, especially if you time it right and avoid the school holidays when the paths get rammed. This isn't a mountaineer's challenge - it's a solid hill walk that takes a couple of hours up and back, depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath.

The name means "hill of seven churches" and once you're up there, you understand why locals bothered to climb it regularly. The views across the Conwy Valley are genuinely excellent, stretching towards Snowdonia on clear days. On a grey Welsh afternoon, it's moody and atmospheric. On a good day, it's the kind of spot where you actually remember why you came to North Wales in the first place.

It's a walker's attraction, plain and simple. If your idea of a holiday is sitting in a café, this won't be for you. But if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Maenan Abbey is less than two miles away - it makes for a cracking morning or afternoon outing. The paths are reasonably maintained, though muddy stretches are guaranteed after rain. Bring proper footwear.

Go mid-week if you can, and avoid peak season. The local knowledge in Llanrwst will point you to the trailhead. Free to access, as these things usually are. Allow three hours total if you're not particularly speedy, or two if you know what you're doing. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger children might find it a bit much.
