Cadair Ifan Goch

Two hours of steady climbing through bracken and heather brings you to one of North Wales's most rewarding viewpoints. Cadair Ifan Goch sits above the Conwy Valley like a natural grandstand, offering sweeping views across to Snowdonia's peaks and down the valley towards the coast.

The summit itself is marked by a modest cairn, but the real draw is the 360-degree panorama. On clear days you can pick out Snowdon's distinctive pyramid, while the Conwy winds silver through fields far below. It's proper mountain country up here - no gentle riverside stroll this.

Serious walkers will love the challenge and the solitude. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of a slog will find it well worth the effort, though anyone expecting an easy afternoon out should look elsewhere. The path can be boggy after rain and there's precious little shelter once you're above the treeline.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip from Llanrwst, and pick a day when the weather's settled - there's nothing worse than hauling yourself up here only to find the views lost in cloud.
