Bryn Titley

The walk up Bryn Titley rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to the Cambrian Mountains. It's not a long trudge - most people manage it in under two hours return - and the path is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though it can be boggy underfoot after rain.

This is a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble, so families with older kids will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a bit steep for the grade, depending on their legs. The real appeal isn't the summit marker itself - it's modest - but the walk through proper Welsh moorland with heather and gorse. If you're staying at one of the camping spots near Llanidloes, it makes a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch.

Start early if you can. The light's better, the paths quieter, and you'll avoid the afternoon mist that rolls in across these hills. There's no cafe at the top, so bring your own brew and a sandwich. It's free to walk, obviously, and there are a few spots to park near the trailhead.

Ty Llewelyn and Glangwy Farm are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself locally. The walk doesn't require any special kit - decent boots and a waterproof jacket will see you right. On a gray day it feels moody rather than magical, but that's Mid Wales for you. Some people love it, others find it a touch bleak.
