Buck Hill

Standing at 524 metres, this modest summit offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Durham Dales without the crowds that plague higher peaks. The walk up from Barnard Castle takes about 45 minutes through rough moorland - proper walking boots essential as the path can be boggy after rain.

From the top, you'll see across to the Yorkshire Dales and down into Teesdale's green valley below. It's not spectacular, but there's something satisfying about having a whole hill to yourself on a weekday morning. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and little else.

Walkers looking for a half-day challenge will find this fits the bill nicely. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of mud will enjoy it too, though toddlers might struggle with the terrain. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views and perhaps spot some of the area's wildlife.

Staying at one of the several caravan parks near Barnard Castle makes this an easy addition to a Teesdale holiday. Doe Park Caravan Park sits closest at just over half a mile from the trailhead. After the walk, Barnard Castle itself rewards with proper cafes and the impressive castle ruins - a good way to round off the day.
