Barnard Castle

The River Tees cuts a dramatic path through limestone cliffs here, creating some of the most spectacular gorge scenery in northern England. Barnard Castle sits proudly above these rushing waters, its medieval castle ruins dominating the skyline and giving the town its name. This is proper Pennine country - wild, windswept, and utterly beautiful.

The surrounding landscape is a walker's paradise. Head north and you'll find yourself climbing towards Swarthy Top and the neighbouring peaks of Harker Hill and Goldsborough, where the views stretch across Teesdale's magnificent expanse. The contrast is striking - from the gentle riverside meadows to the stark beauty of Blackton Reservoir Nature Reserve, where red grouse call across the heather moorland.

Down in the town itself, the cobbled streets wind between 18th-century buildings that house independent shops and traditional pubs. Market day brings a proper buzz, though midweek you'll often have the place largely to yourself. The castle ruins are free to explore and offer cracking views down the valley.

Getting here is straightforward enough - it's about 20 minutes from both Darlington and Bishop Auckland by car, though the buses can be a bit sporadic. The A66 runs nearby, making it easily accessible from both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.

Staying at one of the local caravan parks makes perfect sense for exploring Upper Teesdale. You're ideally placed for day trips to both the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, while spots like Balderhead Reservoir and the ancient woodland of Birk Hat Hills are right on your doorstep. The Former limekiln near Blackton adds a touch of industrial heritage to your walks through this magnificent landscape.
