Burnhope Burn catchwater

The catchwater at Burnhope Burn is a modest reservoir that serves the practical purpose of collecting water for the surrounding area, but don't let that put you off. It's a proper little spot for a walk, especially if you're based at one of the caravan parks around Consett and need somewhere to stretch your legs without driving far. The water itself is calm and reflective, surrounded by moorland that feels genuinely remote despite being just outside a working town.

You won't find visitor facilities or fancy infrastructure here - this is the real thing, not a tourist attraction dressed up for the guidebooks. It's the kind of place where you'll spot the occasional fisherman and maybe some waterfowl if you're lucky. The walk around the perimeter takes about an hour depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views across the valley. It's flat enough for most fitness levels, though the ground can be boggy after rain.

Families with older kids will get more from this than those with toddlers. History types won't find much to chew on, but if you're interested in industrial heritage, Consett itself has plenty to explore - the old steelworks site tells a fascinating story about the town's working past.

From Village Green Holiday Park or Bonners Lodge, you're within easy striking distance for a morning or afternoon visit. Go early to avoid crowds, not that you'll find many at the best of times. It's free to access and worth combining with other walks in the Derwent Valley if you're in the area for a week or so.
