Burton Hill

The walk up Burton Hill is one of those Herefordshire climbs that doesn't look much on the map but catches you out halfway up. From Hereford, it's a straightforward enough trek - the kind of thing you can knock out in an afternoon without breaking a sweat, though the final push to the summit is steeper than you'd expect.

Once you're up there, the views across the Wye Valley are genuinely good. On a clear day you can pick out the Black Mountains to the west and the Forest of Dean beyond. The hill itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic crags or stone towers - but that's rather the point. It's a proper working landscape, nothing prettified, and that's what makes it feel real.

Walkers make up most of the traffic here. It's not a family stroll-in-the-park sort of place, though determined kids with decent boots will manage fine. You'd want to allow a couple of hours return trip from the car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's no café, no gift shop, no interpretation boards - just a hill and the view from it.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks around Hereford - Moorhampton or Preston Campsite are close enough - Burton Hill makes a solid half-day outing between exploring the cathedral and visiting nearby attractions. Bring a flask and good weather, and you'll have a morning well spent.
